REDEEM THIS - great new book by Cami Checketts!

Some men are beyond redemption. Alex is one of them.

After Alex Chakhota was blackmailed and manipulated into becoming a hit man to protect his sister, serving time as the FBI's assassin doesn't do much to ease his conscience. His next assignment brings him face to face with Brittany, a beautiful woman that believes he's more than the killer he's been made into. The road to redemption is long for someone with a blackened soul, and with lives hanging in the balance, Alex has a short deadline.

Detective Scott Bentley's days of law enforcement are behind him. When he's asked to host agents at his secluded ranch for an FBI sting operation, Scott cannot refuse. Ivy McMahon shows up with the team, and Scott gets more than he signed up for. Not only can she hack into the any computer system, she's found a way into Scott's heart. The trouble is that she's in protective custody and when the job ends, she'll disappear.

Is redemption possible for those whose lives are scarred by the past? With danger crowding close, not even love may have a chance to redeem before it's too late.

Amie & Bethanie Borst - Mom/Teen Daughter Writing Team - Scarily Ever Laughter Series!

Thanks so much for participating in our blog tour, Kimberley! We appreciate your support and are so happy to tell your audience a little about our book, LITTLE DEAD RIDING HOOD!

You know things are going to suck when you’re the new kid. But when you’re the new kid and a vampire… well, it bites!

Unlike most kids, Scarlet Small’s problems go far beyond just trying to fit in. She would settle for a normal life, but being twelve years old for an entire century is a real pain in the neck. Plus, her appetite for security guards, house pets and bloody toms (tomato juice) is out of control. So in order to keep their vampire-secret, her parents, Mort and Drac, resort to moving for the hundredth time, despite Scarlet being dead-set against it. Things couldn’t be worse at her new school, either. Not only does she have a strange skeleton-girl as a classmate, but a smelly werewolf is intent on revealing her secret. When she meets Granny—who fills her with cookies, goodies, and treats, and seems to understand her more than anyone—she’s sure things will be different. But with a fork-stabbing incident, a cherry pie massacre, and a town full of crazy people, Scarlet’s O-positive she’ll never live to see another undead day.

Not even her Vampire Rule Book can save her from the mess she’s in. Why can’t she ever just follow the rules?

Add Little Dead Riding Hood to your Goodreads to-read list here Purchase LDRH at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or your favorite Indie bookstore!

Five facts about Scarlet Small:
  1. She has a sweet fang. Unless you want your goodies to disappear, I highly suggest you hide all sweets from sight.
  2. Scarlet has issues with dogs. You can imagine her trouble when she realizes her new school is host to a smelly werewolf.
  3. Scarlet has been twelve years old for a century. Do you know how hard it is to keep up with fashion trends? She'll stick with her high-collared mourning dress, thank you very much.
  4. Bonnie & Clyde were fangsters. Bet you didn't know that. Bet you also didn't know that Scarlet wears Clyde's fedora religiously.
  5. Scarlet is afraid of the dark. And of creepy woods. And of losing her afterlife. What's it to you?
Did I mention that Scarlet has a bit of an attidude? Yeah. There's that.

SHADOWS IN THE CURTAIN, new novel by my friend Cami Checketts!

Hi Everyone!

I'm part of the blog tour for Cami and her new novel - which sounds amazing! Yes, it's in my Kindle awaiting my attention . . . I'm SO behind on reading it's not even funny! But I've read the first chapter and I can tell you that it's terrific!

Even though I'm a Middle-Grade and Young Adult novelist I read Adult lit as well and I'm a sucker for mystery and suspense. Big Agatha Christie fan here. When I was growing up I read tons of Nancy Drew and Phyllis Whitney mysteries as a kid and then moved on to Mary Stewart, Daphne DuMaurier, and Victoria Holt. How about you??

I think all that mystery and suspense rubbed off on me because even though I write contemporary family stories they are also filled with suspense, a bit of magical realism, and mystery.

Every stage actress wants fans, but what happens when one goes too far?

Emmy has the perfect life— a house on the beach, a successful career headlining the local theater, and love. But when a brutal murder brings unimaginable grief, Emmy’s world comes crashing down. As she tries to pick up the pieces, she can’t seem to avoid Josh, the new fireman in town.

Emmy does her best to fight the sizzle in her chest when Josh is near. But with the stalker still out there, terrorizing her and those she cares about, she can’t fall for anyone—especially Josh, a suspect in the murder investigation.

If Emmy allows a man to get close, it’s not just her heart she puts at risk, it’s her life.

“Cami Checketts can spin a tale like no other. Love, suspense, thrills, she has it all, and Shadows in the Curtain is no exception. What a thrill ride! I highly recommend this book. 10 stars!!”

Sherry Gammon, author of the Port Fare Series

“I’m a sucker for the exciting parts, and this book has scenes that had my eyes racing my heart to the end of each page!”

Amanda Tru, author of the Yesterday Series

Cami Checketts' books Poison Me and The Colony are only $.99 for the length of the Shadows in the Curtain blog tour - August 4th - 9th.

Poison Me

Jake Merrill was raised by his grandmother, Ruby, and her hilarious friends. After a suspicious death at the retirement home where Ruby lives, she enlists Jake and Chanel, the beautiful activities director, to help her find the killer.

But secrets Ruby has kept for decades threaten her family and the man she’s always loved but could never have. Chanel’s unstable ex-boyfriend, a presumably dead relative, and vicious criminals add to the confusion. Time is running out as Jake, Chanel, and Ruby desperately search for clues to solve the murders and fight to save those they love.

The Colony

To protect her sons from the mistakes of her past, Brinlee Trapper escapes to a secluded mountain home. But there are dangers lurking in the mountains she has never encountered. The little family is saved from injury by Jed, a mysterious hunter. Brinlee is drawn to him, but she worries about his involvement with a peaceful commune hidden deep in the mountains behind her property.

Lance, Brinlee's attentive neighbor, has his own troubled history. Between his obvious attraction to Brinlee and his developing love for her children, Brinlee finds it more than difficult to guard her heart against this tender intrusion.

While Jed offers a life of excitement and freedom, Lance holds the key to the family Brinlee always wanted. When it comes time to choose, she learns that both men have secrets that could shatter her fledgling trust in men and the wrong decision could leave more than her heart exposed to danger.

Excerpt from Shadows in the Curtain

Timothy stuck to her side while people surged passed with compliments, hand squeezes, and the occasional hug. Emmy searched every eye, but only saw excitement from a fun performance or weariness from sitting too long. If anyone had murder in mind, he was as good at putting on a fake face as she was.

No one piqued her curiosity. Until he came. She had no clue what his name was, but the past few weeks she’d seen him almost every morning at the gym. He was much too good-looking, with his rippling muscles and deep blue eyes. She always avoided looking directly at him, though she knew that was as obvious an indicator of her attraction as staring would be. She couldn’t avoid him now.

The wide entryway, which featured plush, faded carpet and wood-planked walls, shrank as he drew nearer. The babble of the crowd faded. He reached for her hand, staring deep into her eyes. Her hand fitted itself into his like he was a magnet. Her entire body leaned toward him.

“You were amazing. So passionate.” He smiled and the room swayed.
Emmy was quite sure the passion she experienced right now had nothing to do with singing or acting. She should draw away but couldn’t force herself to. “Thank you,” she managed, embarrassed by the huskiness of her voice as she tried to catch a breath.

The crowd pressed forward, and he was forced to release her hand and move to the side. His blonde date gushed over Emmy for a second, and then they were gone.

Emmy continued greeting other patrons but couldn’t forget the allure of his blue eyes. He didn’t seem like the creepy stalker type, but she had to wonder. Could he be the one sending the notes?

And there will be a Twitter party for the #2013SummerAuthorBlitz on July 19 at 7pm and a Facebook event on July 26 at 3pm, so don’t miss them.
Kimberley G. Little

Today I’m featuring author Kimberley G. Little, author of the middle-grade mystery novel WHEN THE BUTTERFLIES CAME, who’s giving away a copy of her book and some swag (see below). Told you she was wonderful.

This book is her sixth for young readers, and it tells the story of young Tara Doucet dealing with love, loss, family and magic. Here’s the description:
Everybody thinks Tara Doucet has the perfect life. But Tara’s life is anything but perfect: Her dear Grammy Claire has just passed away, her mom is depressed and distant, and she and her sister, Riley, can’t agree on anything. But when mysterious and dazzling butterflies begin to follow her around after Grammy Claire’s funeral, Tara knows in her heart that her grandmother has left her one final mystery to solve.
Tara finds a stack of keys and detailed letters from Grammy Claire. Note by note, Tara learns unexpected truths about her grandmother’s life. As the letters grow more ominous and the clues harder to decipher, Tara realizes that the secrets she must uncover could lead to grave danger. And when Tara and Riley are swept away to the beautiful islands of Chuuk to hear their grandmother’s will, Tara discovers the most shocking truth of all, one that will change her life forever.
Sounds so enchanting! I can’t wait to read it.
I asked Kimberley four quick questions. Here’s what she said:

What inspired you to write WHEN THE BUTTERFLIES CAME?

When the Butterflies Came bookcover
Answer: So many things! The magical world of butterflies . . . spooky Louisiana swamps . . . old plantation houses . . . treehouses on an island in the South Pacific . . . and a girl who is connected to all those things through her Grammy Claire.

I love mysteries and wanted to try my hand at writing a mystery that didn’t have ghosts or paranormal elements. I took the prettiest girl at school (also a character from my book, CIRCLE OF SECRETS), but gave her a brain along with her silky, waterfall hair.

Tara begins receiving secret letters and keys from her scientist grandmother whose sudden death was untimely, and who imparts her secrets from beyond the grave through these letters so Tara can figure out who/what is trying to destroy the unusual butterflies her grandmother was researching in Micronesia.

It was fun to write about a very smart and very cool grandmother because I never knew my own grandmothers — and I hope I can be a very cool grandma too someday!

A Terrific Cookbook for Kids by Christina Dymock - a Must See!

I am SO pleased to feature my very good friend's brand spankin' new book! Christina Dymock is amazing, adorable, talented, and has been very supportive of my career as well. She and I met three years ago at my first LDStorymakers conference in Utah and immediately hit it off and now we spend a LOT of time at the conference hanging out and talking a mile a minute.

Look at this GREAT cover!

And I love these words straight from Christina herself:

"When you cook with kids, don't aim for perfection, aim for smiles."

Table of Contents - Yummy!

The following are words of wisdom about writing fiction versus nonfiction and some kitchen antics from Christina . . . AND I'm giving away a hardcover copy of this book to one lucky winner! Please leave a comment to enter and please share this book/blogpost with your own friends and family via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or blog post - and give yourself some more points in the comments.

(Wouldn't this book make a fabulous gift!?)

Take it away, Christina . . . (who is also the author of 101 THINGS TO DO WITH POPCORN)

Kimberley,

Thanks for having me on your blog to talk about my new book and about writing a cookbook.

As with any book, writing Young Chefs was a journey that was both rocky and rewarding. I was blessed to spend a lot of time with my kids in the kitchen; enjoying good food while observing their skills and areas where they needed instruction. I learned that younger kids like what I call destruction jobs (cracking eggs, dumping ingredients, chopping) while older kids like to assemble. We’ve had some major spills and some major accomplishments. There really is no end to our lessons because we are constantly cooking and baking.

I can tell you that there are some aspects of writing a cookbook that transfer over to writing fiction, but there are some things that are very different.

Write Then Taste

When I’m working on a cookbook, I get to eat my words. (Yum!) In order to come up with a recipe I need to be away from the kitchen. This may seem strange; but if I can smell a beef dish cooking for dinner, then I have a hard time focusing on a fruit dessert. My office is usually aroma free so I start there. Once the recipe is mapped out, I take it to the kitchen for testing. I personally test and taste every one of my recipes.

They don’t always turn out. (Not even my usually unbiased chickens want the leftovers!) It’s like a scene that doesn’t move the story along – that recipe just has to go. Other times, I get an okay dish. This is like a scene that has merit but needs to be flushed out. I can keep it; I just have to fix it first. Then there are the recipes that work perfectly the first time and every time after that. Those scenes get to stay forever!

Word Count

Another difference between fiction writing and cookbook writing is that I don’t stress about word count when I’m writing a cookbook. My books have a recipe and photo quota to fill instead of a word count requirement. This can be good and bad. Making sure I get a variety of dishes while staying under my maximum number of recipes can be tricky. Both word count and recipe quotas are based on the book package a publisher will put together. Some packages hold between 30 and 45 recipes while others hold over 300.

Selling a Book

Please don’t sit down and write a 300 recipe cookbook! Cookbooks are sold to agents and publishers based on a few solid recipes and a writing sample instead of an entire manuscript. For Young Chefs, I submitted seven recipes and two photos of each recipe. Once they sent over a contract and book package I knew how many recipes I needed to put together. Check an agent’s website or blog for their requirements before you submit.

Just as there are many differences, there are also a few things that are the same.

A Hook

When it comes to selling any book to a publishing house or an agent, the number one thing you need is a good hook. What sets your book apart from the rest? There are many children’s cookbooks on the market, but Young Chefs is a cookbook for kids with helpful hints and extras for adults. For example, on each page there is an icon for the type of help the child may need. At a glance you can see if they will be working with the stove, a sharp knife, or the microwave. There’s also a section one how to do things, like measure wet and dry ingredients and spray a pan with non-stick cooking spray, so kids can learn the basics and build their skills.

Hard Work

Both fiction and non-fiction writing is hard work. It’s not something you get lucky at. It takes time and effort on the part of the writer to create a book. I guess as a sub heading here I could put in perseverance. If you stick to it, you have a better chance of getting published.

No matter what type of writing you work at, trust you heart. I’ve found that writing is a work of heart. No one writes books because they have to; they write them because they love to. Sure it stinks like overcooked asparagus at times, but that just makes the chocolate cake times all the sweeter.

SWEET!!! And thank you so much for sharing your talents and recipes and advice with us today!

Dear Readers: Don't forget to comment, share, buy a copy for your own family, and then purchase a second copy to give away!

THE NINE CIRCLES OF RAVEN VALLEY HIGH
(from pg. 112 of FORGET ME NOT by Carolee Dean copyright 2012)

There’s an abandoned football field
up on a hill that looks down
on the new stadium.
It’s filled with soldiers from some
obscure civil war battle that didn’t
make it into the history books.

Day after day
boys barely older than me
fight the same war.
Night after night
they lie bloody on the grass.
Every now and then,
when one of them is ready
to cross over,
a raven comes
to take him
to the next world.

There used to be a courthouse
where the old gym stands.
They hung murderers
and horse thieves
on the steps.
That’s where the
violent offenders go.

As for their victims,
they occupy a
corner of the prop room
behind the theater.

There’s a dark corner
in the cafeteria
reserved for those
who starved to death.
Two members
from a family of early settlers
who didn’t store enough
food for the winter
and an anorexic cheerleader
from the nineties.
An abandoned ropes course
is home to the foolhardy,
and the weight room
at the back of the gym
is for the jocks
who still can’t believe
they died in their prime.

The administration building is
A melting pot
of those who succumbed
to fatal diseases,
broken hearts, and
people who just got stuck
for no apparent reason.

Not good. Not bad.
Just too mediocre
to continue on.

The Raptor Circle is the home of the one person
who died from an act of God.

As for the H-Hall,
I spent a week there last spring
when I went up to the old football field
and swallowed that bottle of pills

When I was in middle school,
Frankie used to take me
up on the hill
to see the games.

Now all I watch
are dead people.

From this perspective,
it’s like viewing
a theater in the round.
